Legal Deadline Calculator
Add a limitations period to a start date to estimate a filing deadline.
How this estimate is calculated
The calculator adds the limitations period to the start date using calendar math.
deadline = start date + years + months
What this tool does not do
- Tolling for minority, incapacity, military service, or bankruptcy
- Discovery rules that start the clock later
- Shortened periods in some contracts
- Special notice requirements for claims against governments
- Court rules on filing and service
Use the result as a planning aid, then confirm the governing period in your state code and, when a deadline is close, speak with an attorney.
Questions We Get Asked
How do I count the limitations period?
In most states the period runs from the date the claim accrues, which is usually when the harm occurs, and the last day to file is calculated by adding the period to that date.
Does the deadline fall on a weekend?
If the last day falls on a weekend or holiday, court rules often extend it to the next business day. This calculator does not apply those rules, so check the local rule.
Can the period start later?
Yes. A discovery rule can start the clock when a reasonable person would discover the injury, which is common in medical malpractice and hidden fraud cases.
What if I miss the deadline?
A claim filed after the limitations period is generally barred, and the defendant can raise the deadline as a defense. Missing it usually cannot be fixed later.
